Il s'applique à la détermination en laboratoire de la masse volumique des grains dans le cadre d'investigations géotechniques, et décrit deux méthodes : une méthode avec un pycnomètre à déplacement de liquide et une méthode avec un pycnomètre à déplacement de gaz.
