Le présent document fournit des éléments communs pour les communications de messagerie de base, critiques et non critiques du point de vue temporel, entre les programmes d'application dans un environnement automatisé et les équipements spécifiques aux bus de terrain de Type 20. Le terme critique du point de vue temporel est utilisé pour représenter la présence d'une fenêtre temporelle, dans le cadre de laquelle une ou plusieurs actions spécifiées doivent être réalisées avec un certain niveau de certitude défini. La non réalisation des actions spécifiées dans le cadre de la fenêtre temporelle peut mener à l'échec des applications sollicitant les actions, avec un risque annexe pour les équipements, l'installation et éventuellement les personnes. L'édition de 2008 de la norme européenne EN 61158-5-20 n'a pas été publiée comme norme française.
